To survive and thrive, all of us need our basic needs to be met.We believe that all people have a right to basic needs, and that each of us shares a moral responsibility to make this happen. On a most basic level, humans require a few things: sleep, food, and a place to go to the bathroom and attend to hygiene. In our climate, we also need dry, warm clothes. This may seem obvious, but people die every year in our community because these basic needs are not met.
Through community networking with both housed and unhoused people, we are periodically contacted for individuals in need during crisis events. For example, if a person’s tent burned up last night, or all their belongings were confiscated by police, we do our best to provide the basics so they can survive another day.
We collect donations of adult-size warm clothes, coats/jackets, socks, shoes/boots, blankets, sleeping bags, tents, tarps, camp stoves and other camp gear. On a weekly basis, we distribute these directly to individuals on the street and to organizations that serve this population (White Bird, Egan Warming Centers, Occupy Medical, First Place Family Center, and others).
